A well known Builders Merchant based in Southampton are looking to welcome a Product Category Manager to their growing team.

As the Category Manager you will need to identify, source, create, monitor and maintain a credible range within multiple product group sub-sections whilst supporting promotional or Limited-Edition campaign opportunities.

Ensure products offered meet the demands of all target customer groups.  This relates to product quality, packaging, margin aspiration and competitiveness in the marketplace across all products.

Keep up to date with market trends and reacting to changes in demand are key elements of the role.

Key Responsibilities

The Buying Category Manager has responsibility for the products purchased for sale by the organisation.  This is broken down as follows:

  1. Understand the sub-section and what is required to offer a credible range to their customers by studying the market, being aware of our competitors’ offerings and identifying where changes are required to current range profiles.
  2. Monitor market trends, competitor strategies and evaluate with effective benchmarking to collaborate with our Sales and Marketing teams to identify new product opportunities.
  3. Identify, source, and deliver new products to enhance a current product category, and full ranges where additional, new requirement is identified.
  4. Identify new manufacturing opportunities, from current and potential supplier contacts. This will require a level of global travel to visit the factories and attendance at international trade fairs and end-user shows in the UK.
  5. Ensure the ongoing requirements of the business regarding item and range quality, cost price, product benefits and features and item profitability are met.
  6. Work alongside the QA department both in UK/Far East to ensure existing and new products are compliant with relevant UK/EU/International Standards and Directives.
  7. Work closely with Supply Chain and Sales colleagues to ensure company requirements for availability and stock-turn are met, minimising the need to use depreciation or write-down, and ensuring warehouse space is used most efficiently.

Skills and experience required

  1. Have relevant industry experience within building.
  2. Good knowledge of understanding of their product range.
  3. CIPS or similar qualifications advantageous but not essential.
  4. Purchasing experience.
